History Of Manga

L.I: To read for meaning and understanding.

Our challenge today was to complete a reading comprehension about the history of Manga to show that we are reading for meaning and understanding. Our final challenge in this activity was to create a DLO to share the information we found out.

A fact I found interesting was that Manga in Japanese simply means comic and that Manga is drawn and written by a Mangaka.

Manga Artist | Akira Toriyama

L.I: To read for meaning and understanding.

Our challenge today was to use our smart searching skills to create a DLO in our own words that tell us about the life of our favourite Manga artist or a well known Manga artist.

A fact I found interesting about Akira Toriyama was that he was inspired by the Disney movies during his childhood and Akira Toriyama first Manga was called Dr. Slump.

Hauora

L.I: To make diagram of Hauora.

This week we created a poster about Hauora. In the poster we wrote the different meanings of each wall for example: Taha Wairua is your spiritual well being. Taha Wairua explores your relationship...

Having the four walls standing would make an person and athletes feel motivated, happy and would have a balanced mindset which basically means a positive mindset.

Hauora & Olympians

Having all the four walls up help the hard working Athlete have a balance mindset and a healthy, strong body. Mistakes athletes made would help them push harder and instead of being in a stressed situation. If the four walls were all standing they would feel motivated, proud, confident and happy. If the four walls feel they would feel terrible, dissapointed, upset and have no motivation.

 L.I: To summarise a text

Fantastic fish use their gills to breathe underwater. They have three different fins to help them swim. These are the dorsal, pectoral and tail fin.

__________________________________________________________________________________

For reading with Mrs Linda we read fantastic fish. It’s about different unique fish. Fiish have three different fins. They are the dorsal fin which keeps the fish from rolling over, the tail fin which pushes the fish forward and the pectoral fish which helps the fish steer.

Some interesting facts we found were that fish have three different types of fins. Mudskippers can live out of the water and a manta ray has a wingspan about 7 metres across.

We found this activity fun and interesting because we found out the different uses of the fins and there are some fish that don’t look like fish for example the seahorse and the mudskipper. This was an enjoyable activity.

Science Project

L.I: To learn about the different taste buds.

This week for science we researched and learned about the four different taste buds which is: sweet, sour, bitter and salty. After that we finally started the experiment and we tasted each bottle of liquid. Then we recored the information.

After my investigation, I found out that the tongue has many nerves that help detect and transmit taste signals to the brain. Also not everyone has the same taste buds.

I enjoyed this experiment but I didn't enjoy some of the liquids because it tasted disgusting.

Mindfulness Reflection #1

LI: To understand the meaning behind the pause breathe smile program.

This week we had our first session of the Pause Breathe Smile program. Our learning was based on having a calm mindset. We were introduced to this program by first defining what the word mindfulness is. Then we defined it and shared our different definitions with others.

After talking about mindfulness we were introduced to the red zone and the green zone. They are two different zones. The red zone is when you feel stressed, anxious, distracted and others. The green zone is when you feel calm, relaxed, peaceful, curious, clear, balanced, content and engaged.

We were balancing our mind set by forgiving bad things that happened in the past and calming our mind down and focusing on the present. To do this we sat in a circle and listened to the bell while breathing in and out, this helped us relax and focus on positive things.

I enjoyed this session because we learnt about having a positive mindset and about being mindful of others. During this session I learnt how to Pause, Breathe and Smile and calm my mind.

Birds & Matariki

This week we did an activity called Birds and Matariki.

We made a DLO and found three birds that were captured for Matariki, then we described each bird. In the DLO we also wrote how the bird was cooked. The three birds that were in our DLO were Kereru, Tui, and a Kaka.

I found out that a Tui was eaten for Matariki and there threats are predation and habitat loss.

I enjoyed this activity because we lots of different information about each bird.

Osmosis & Transpiration

This week for tech we are leaning about Osmosis and Transpiration. Photosynthesis. Photosynthesis -make food Plants Water can only move around a flower by xylem.

In the experiment we used Food coloring so we could see the movement in the plant.

I enjoyed it because this experiment was really interesting and I liked how I could the blue in the celery.

Matariki

Matariki is the Maori new year celebration. It takes places each year when the cluster of stars known as Matariki are seen in our skies. The new year is a time for new beginnings and is a time to embrace tradition.

To strengthen our connections to Matariki we had a choice of research activities.

I found out why Matariki disappears on May and reappears on June.

I enjoyed this activity because we the task were interesting and we got to do it in a group to help us finish it faster.

Motivation

L.I: To edit our writing using DRAFT.

This week for Writing in pairs we wrote a poem. Before starting the poem we choose a word to use for our poem. Our word was motivation, and we used the 5 senses. The 5 senses are, smell, feel, taste, hear and touch.

In our poem we used complex sentences, metaphor, simile and abstract nouns. To help us write our poem we also used wordhippo to help find other interesting words. We used DRAFT to edit our poem. DRAFT stands for:

Delete
Rearrange
Add
Fix
Talk

Metaphor A metaphor is a comparison of two things, saying one thing is the other without using ‘like’ or ‘as’.  An abstract noun is one that refers to an idea, quality or state (you cannot see, hear, touch or smell an abstract noun). The punctuation we used was full stops and commas. Lastly, a simile is comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.

I enjoyed this activity because we got to create interesting poems.

Topic 5 - Flower power

L.I: To learn how to dissect a flower. For science today we learned how to dissect a flower. Before dissecting the flower you need to have your tools and it is:
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Flower
We removed one petal and one sepal. Pinch the ovary and cut the style straight.
After that we prepared a pollen slide and saw it under a microscope. I enjoyed this activity because we got to learn how to dissect a flower.

I also learnt that a hibiscus has a a female and male gametophyte.

Success

L.I: To write an abstract noun senses poem.

Our task was to create a poem using metaphors and abstract nouns.

A metaphor is a comparison of two things, saying one thing is the other without using ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Abstract nouns are things the we can see but we can't physically touch it.

The 5 senses are sight, hearing, taste, smell and feel.

First, we chose a word from the list, our group picked success. After picking the word,we looked for the structure in the example given to us. Then, we created a poem with the structure. After writing the poem, we created a DLO about the poem.

The word that our group chose was Success.

We really enjoyed this activity, because it taught us how to create metaphors and poems, using abstract nouns.

Forming an Opinion

 L.I: To consider both perspectives.

We were tasked to read the story about Lake Taupo to understand if the story was fact or story makes sense by saying if the story is true or fake. We wrote our opinion to see that why we picked which side to see if it was right or wrong. We wrote that taupo says according to legend which means it happened but actually is true.

I found this activity enjoyable because we got find information I haven't found about and I thought the text was interesting.

Summarising

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. We used the summarising DLO to help us write what we think happeneds in the in the story is true. First we needed to find 20 inportant words from the story, then we had to find the 6 most important words from the 20 important words. After doing that we used those six words to make a short story about the story. I found this task intersting because I got to summarise a story in fewer words, meaning I understand what they story is about.

Main Ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text.

First to start off the task we watched a video about how Maui slowed down the sun. After watching the video we wrote down the main ideas that happened in the video into this DLO. After finding the inportant Ideas from that we find the four very important ideas. One of the four very important ideas is that Using the flax for ropes slowed the sun. When you find the four very important ideas we found the three vital idean from the four very important ideas. I found this task fun because when you find main ideans from the text that means that you understand the text throughly.

Venn Diagram

LI: To find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and text of “ The Beginning "

This week for reading we have been focusing on the differences of two types of ways a story can be said. This week we were finding differences and similarities from the video and text from "the Begining". This text was about our group finding things that are different and simaler bewtweeen the too. In the video verison it shows the seperation of mother earth and father sky, and in the written version it's explain the love for the two. I enjoyed this task because I got to see the differneces and similaritites bewtween two storys.

African Plains Safari - Summary

 L.I: To summarise a text.

Summary:

The African Plains Safari teems with abundant wildlife. You choose where you will explore on your adventure for an unforgettable holiday in Botswana in Africa.

________________________________________________________________________________

For Reading (with Mrs Linda) we read a text called African Plains Safaris. African Plains Safaris is mainly about the wildlife in africa. The story takes place in botswana. The text talks about the places in africa. One of the places are Deception Valley. A fun fact about deception valley is that 200 different species of birds populate deception Valley.

We found this activity interesting because we got to explore more information about the africa. The most interesting fact we found was that there is a hotel in deception valley. Another interesting fact we found was that there is places you can relax like at the hotel after you finish.

Where will you go to at the African Plains Safari?

Lake Ngami            Deception Valley      Passarge

Central Kalahari     Deception Pan         Piper’s Pan

Game Preserve       Leopard Pan

PBS Collage

L.I: To create a photo collage about life at PBS.

I collected photos about that represents our school. I collected photos with us in interschools, people working and PBS going on school trips.

CARE stands for:

  • Confidence
  • Attitude
  • Respect
  • Excellence and Innovation
This piece of work links to Respect. Respect is always taking of the enviroment and being kind to others.

I enjoyed this task because I really liked the photo's tat I found.

Shoes Narrative

For this task we created a DLO about our shoes narrative we wrote about.

We started by planning our narrative. After that we created the narrative and the title of our narrative was Rusty Souls.

I enjoyed this activity because it didn't take us long to finish the task, we just copy and pasted our narrativ we created before and put it on a DLO.

Science - Topic 4 Floating & Sinking

L.I: To check which objects would float or sink.

For science we did experiments on floating and sinking.  First we talked about floating, sinking and semi-float. After doing writing down all the information we know about floating and sinking we started the experiments.

What is Negative and positive buoyancy?
Negative buoyancy causes the object to sink.
Positive buoyancy cause the object to float.

We checked the size, weight, composition, and made a prediction. For the first experiment nearly all the objects sunk and for the second experiment some of it floated and semi floated.

I enjoyed this experiment because I enjoyed the part where we checked if it would float or sink.

Using the five senses

LI: to use the five senses and personifications to help us paint a picture with words.

LI: To devise a writing plan.

LI: To use the ideas on your plan to write a Narrative.

For writing we created a narrative about shoes with the five senses and using personification.

The five senses are:

  1. Sound

  2. Sight

  3. Touch

  4. Feel

  5. Taste

Personification is when you give human characteristics to something non human.

First we made a copy of a the framework of the narrative and answered the questions:

  • How did they get there?

  • WHat happened along the way?

  • How did they feel

  • How did they see

  • How did they hear

  • How did they smell

  • How did they touch

After answering the questions, we moved on creating the narrative by using the plan and ideas we have written on the framework DLO.

I enjoyed this writing activity because we created an interesting narrative and enjoyed the narrative

Lever

L.I: To find information about simple machines.

For inquiry we were learning about simple machine. We collaborated in our group to find information about simple machines, there are six types of simple machines. Our challenge was to create diagrams (information picture) to show our diagram, we alo summarised it in 25 words..Simple machines are able to help humans in ways that they, themselves may not be able to. A lever is a simple machine used to lift objects with less amount of force. A lever is a stick that’s able to move backwards and forwards.

Inclined Plane

L.I:To find information about simple machines.

For inquiry we are working on simple machines. We created six DLO's about the six simple machines. This DLO is about a simple machine called the Inclined plane, an inclined plane is An inclined plane is one of the simplest machines. It’s also known as a ramp. A ramp helps your load move  easier to higher levels. We created our own drawing of what we see a pulley as.

This Labeled Diagram was fun to work on because we got to learn what the inclined plane is used for.

Dialogue

L.I: To understand how to use and correctly punctuate dialogue when writing.

For writing we were we did dialogue. We picked a sitaution and created a conversation. The situation I picked to create my conversation was when the wolf was furious that he couldn't bust the brick house.

After creating a conversation we created a DLO on what is dialogue, and where the punctuation go.

Dialogue is a conversation between two people or more.

I enjoyed this activity because when writing the dialogue we got to use this interesting website called Ifaketext messages.

PB4L (Class Expectations)

L.I: To follow the rules and expectations, expected from teachers.

This weeks PB4L learning is about following classroom rules and expectations. PB4L is a acronym describing Positive Behavior for Learning. PB4L helps us understand the correct behavior for inside classroom learning and outer learning. This consist of Classroom discussions, walking to assembly, behaviour on school trips, wet day procedure eg. respecting wet day monitors. All of these prospects will help us develop a strong and healthy learning enviroment.

I found this activity interesting because we got photos that I liked and thought would be good to put into the DLO

Topic 3 (Trying out Laboratory Equipment)

For science out topic was about trying out laboratory equipment. we did. Also for science we did two experiments.

We poured 200mls of cold water into the breaker and checked the temperature, then we scooped 10g of sugar into a petri dish. After doing this we poured the sugar into the breaker and timed it to see how long is dissolved. For the second experiment we did the same thing but instead we used hot water.

The time for the first experiment was 1 minute and 3 seconds. The time for the second experiment was 15 seconds. The hot water dissolved it quicker because it's hot and it would the melt the sugar.

I enjoyed this activity because we got to do two experiments.

Topic 2 (Science)

For Science we learned about different science equipment.

Some of the science equipment were a pipette, spatula, bunsen burner and other more.

We created a Google doc and have all the pictures of those equipments.

I enjoyed this activity because the experiment was fun.

Do The Robot

L.I: To summarise a text

Summary:

The robot is a type of dance that requires jerky movements and music with strong beats. It was invented and became popular in the 1980’s.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

For reading we looked over a book called Do the Robot. The robot is a type of dance that was first introduced in 1980’s. All your movements should be jerky, with no fluid movements at all.. When moving around at one point you need to freeze in position and be rigid.

Facts we found interesting were that a strong and clear beat is require. How you can put all the moves together to make the dance and you don’t show emotion when doing the dance. Lastt interesting fact was that you experiment with telling a story in your dance. E.g: Is your robot cooking a cake, walking a dog, or having a shower.

We found this activity fun because we attempted doing the robot dance. By reading the steps in the text we looked like good robot dancers.

Current Events

L.I:To find the important information in the current event.
L.I: To identify the authors purpose.

For reading we had to look for a article that's currently been put up and this time we had to find an international article.

The article I worked on was the: El Salvador to make bitcoin legal tender. I found lots of interesting information about that article.

I enjoyed this activity because I found lots of interesting information.

Incredible Invertebrates

 L.I: To summarise a text

Summary:

Invertebrates are animals with no backbone. They vary in size, shape and color. 95 to 99 percent of all animals species on Earth are invertebrates.

__________________________________________________________________________________

For reading (with Mrs Linda) we read the text of Incredible Invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals that have no back bones. Each Invertebrate has different groups. The six main groups are:

  • Molluscs

  • Arachnids

  • Insects

  • Crustaceans

  • Myriapods

  • Annelids

Facts that we found interesting were that Myriapods can grow upto 750 legs. Also earthworms make the better for growing. Lastly fleas are also called minibeasts because their small and they bite several times and cause itchiness. We found this activity interesting and fun because we learnt more facts about invertebrates.
